How To Overcome Solopreneur Setbacks: Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Two years ago, I left corporate America and took a leap into the world of solopreneurship as a fractional CMO. Early success with clients reassured me that I was on the right path, but I quickly realized that many corporate professionals were curious about how to make a similar transition.

That’s when I decided to launch FractionalOfficer.com, a resource to help others confidently enter fractional executive roles and establish a foundational and repeatable business model.

Inspired by my early wins, I decided to take things a step further by creating a SaaS dashboard tool specifically for fractional executives. I envisioned it as a transformative product that would revolutionize how fractional professionals managed their businesses.

I poured thousands of dollars and countless hours into its development. However, within 30 days of launching, I faced the harsh truth: there was no product-market fit. The tool simply didn’t resonate with my audience.

Shutting it down was a tough and humbling decision, but it forced me to reflect deeply on where I could provide the most value.

I chose to lean back into my strengths: being a fractional executive and helping others navigate this career path. That pivot allowed me to build something far more impactful—a thriving community for leadership solopreneurs through SoloGrit.

As leadership solopreneurs—whether you’re a fractional executive, consultant, coach, or advisor—setbacks are inevitable. But they also carry the seeds of your next opportunity.

This week, we’re exploring how to embrace those moments, turn them into lessons, and build the resilience needed to thrive personally and professionally in your business.

Key Steps to Overcome Setbacks

1. Reframe the Situation

Start by figuring out which tasks directly contribute to your business’s success. These are the activities that bring in revenue, improve your processes, or help you deliver exceptional value to your clients.

Example: If a client project falls through, consider how to use the extra time to strengthen your business or develop new services.

2. Take Small, Intentional Steps Forward:

Break down the problem into smaller, actionable steps. Focus on what you can control right now.

Example: If revenue is impacted, prioritize lead generation by reaching out to five new contacts each day or refining your marketing message to attract a more aligned audience.

3. Reconnect with Your Network:

Use setbacks as an opportunity to reengage with your professional community. Share your journey and ask for advice or referrals.

Tool Tip: The SoloGrit community is a great example of a network where leadership solopreneurs can find support, share lessons, and gain actionable insights.

Other networks to consider include LinkedIn professional groups, local business meetups, or online communities like Slack groups tailored to fractional executives and consultants.

4. Focus on Self-Care:

Resilience isn’t just mental—it’s physical and emotional, too. Prioritize activities that recharge you, whether it’s exercising, meditating, or spending time with loved ones.

Pro Tip: Set aside 30 minutes each day this week to do something that fuels your energy and creativity, like journaling or a hobby.

G.R.I.T. Principle:

This week’s guide ties directly to Resilience, one of the core principles of the G.R.I.T. mindset.

Resilience is more than bouncing back—it’s about adapting, learning, and growing stronger through challenges. As leadership solopreneurs, the ability to stay grounded during setbacks while pushing forward is what separates thriving businesses from those that stall.

Resilience ensures that every challenge becomes a stepping stone, not a stumbling block.

🫵 Weekly Challenge

Here’s my challenge for you: This week, take one step to build a new connection. You can:

  • Challenge 1:
  • Reflect on a recent setback and identify one lesson you learned from it. Write down a specific action you can take this week to apply that lesson.

  • Example: If a new client pitch didn’t land, refine your messaging or practice with a peer to improve your delivery. Use a tool like evAIuate to allow AI to review your pitch deck.
  • Challenge 2:
  • Reconnect with a client, mentor, or colleague you haven’t engaged with recently. Share your experience with overcoming setbacks and ask for their perspective or advice.

  • Example: Reach out on LinkedIn or schedule a quick coffee chat to rebuild connections and exchange insights.

  • If you are a part of the SoloGrit community, enroll in the SoloGrit Lunch Club to connect with a random member and build new relationships.
  • Challenge 3:
  • Choose one unfinished task or project that’s been weighing on you and commit to making measurable progress by the end of the week.

  • Example: Complete that blog post draft, finalize your pitch deck, or organize your lead generation workflow. Need to develop a pitch deck or proposal faster?

  • Use a tool like the Gamma app to change the game and save you tons of time!

  • Bonus
  • If you’re part of the SoloGrit community, share your chosen challenge and your action plan in the discussion board. Engage with peers by providing encouragement or feedback on their updates.

  • Midweek, post an update on your progress to celebrate small wins and inspire others.

Let’s tackle this week with resilience, turning challenges into opportunities for growth.
